Verify it's the CRA calling

What to expect when the CRA calls

Be cautious if you receive a call from someone you do not know. Before you provide any personal information, confirm you are speaking with a Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) employee.

CRA employees will identify themselves when they contact you. They will give you their name and a phone number to call them back, if needed. Do not use the phone number provided until you have confirmed it is from the CRA.

Steps to take when you are speaking with a caller

  1. Do not share your information

Do not provide personal information if you do not know it is really the CRA calling.

  2. Get the caller's information

Ask for the caller's name, office name or location, and phone number to call back. Do not trust the caller ID on your phone.

  3. Tell the caller you will verify their information

Let the caller know you will verify their information before calling back.

  4. End the call

After you end the call, use the verification tool below to confirm the phone number is from the CRA.
